How to get a FREE Blood Ketone Meter when Ketostix Fail
When I initially started a ketogenic diet, I would use the urine test strips to monitor for ketones, which would tell me if I was in ketosis or not. I wish someone had told me about this free Blood Ketone Meter!
However, I later found that my readings started to show nothing even though I had been eating a high fat, low carb diet. I wondered… what on earth was wrong?
Why do Ketostix Stop Working?
After doing some research, I found that once my body started to become accustom to a high fat diet and began to utilise the ketones for energy, the free ketones in my urine either did not exist or where not as strong.
Ketostix work mainly off the concentration of ketones in your urine. This makes the long-term use of Ketostix useless, as they will eventually start to read blank.
Ketostix start at a yellow colour (which means you are not in Ketosis) all the way up to a dark purple (which means you’re in fairly heavy ketosis).

The solution? Blood Ketone Meter!
My girlfriend Adele loves to source out bargains at different chemists. As I came along to a few of these bargain hunting trips, I began to notice that I could use a device that is usually suitable for Diabetics called a Glucose Meter to monitor my ketones.
Diabetics need to monitor their ketone levels as to avoid Ketone Acidosis (which can be very harmful). They need to be very precise due to the nature of health risks that ketosis can pose to diabetics.
I wondered up to the counter to check the price of the device that also could check for Ketones. BAM! $70. I was not going to buy one from a chemist. You would have to be crazy!
Later that night I started researching these devices on eBay. Low and behold, I stumbled across this device for $29. What I did not notice straight away was that it also came with a $40 Rebate! Did this mean I could purchase this for FREE?
Sure enough, I bought the device and eagerly awaited its arrival. It came within 1 day and also included a $40 rebate.
Show me where to get this!
So why am I telling you this? Well, I would have felt pretty bad if I had purchased the device in store, only to find out that I could have had the same device for free.
The only catch with this device is that you have to purchase the testing strips separately. It’s a much more accurate way to measure ketones, so purchasing the strips is worth it.
This is an affiliate link, so if you are going to purchase the device anyway, please click-through this link as it helps me to keep creating free content like this for you, and hopefully saves you more than $70 down the track! Thankyou!

The ketone meter is no longer available on EBay I just tried your link. The test strips aren’t either?♀️

Sorry, Christina, this promo is no longer available.

One of the reasons there is a shortage of supply is that these test strips used to cost $30 per box. This was very expensive for people with type 1 diabetes who need to be able to check their ketone levels to ensure they aren’t going into DKA. The companies actually lowered the cost to make it more affordable for people with type 1 diabetes before the Keto diet became a trend. People dieting really shouldn’t be entitled to blood ketone testing strips and if they were on the NDSS you would be paying a whole lot more without a card.
Victoria says
It doesn’t matter the reason a tester is required, if there isn’t any in stock due to the chemist or pharmacy running out..its not the fault of the consumers??? but rather the suppliers. I understand people have life threatening conditions but how is that our fault? Should we all JUST stop buying this product? It’s not like we’re getting them for free (aside from these one off deals)…people are actually paying money for it, the same money you would! And if suppliers are finding its running out quicker than normal, well maybe they need to up their stock next time to meet the needs FOR EVERYONE!
It’s like saying only people who are on a diet/who have medical conditions are ONLY allowed to buy certain products from the store and nothing else! …????????? DOESN’T. MAKE. SENSE! I find it absurd that people even think this is OK???
I love your blogs and videos a lot Aaron. Its really helped me in my early journey of keto. I hope I can stick to it 😀

Is the keto monitor the same as the blood glucose monitor you use if you have diabetes ?
FatForWeightLoss says
Usually yes, but some models don’t accept ketone strips. Please check your current device to see if its applicable.

Please if you are using this for dietary purposes stick to the urine sticks. This may be quick and simple but there is now a shortage of the optimum ketone sticks and as a result many of us type 1 diabetics are unable to use this life saving device. Just last week I went to 4 chemist’s and was told the same thing “sorry we have none in stock due to the number of dieters new using them. We won’t get any for at least a month as the suppliers are out”.
FatForWeightLoss says
Hi Elisa, I understand your concern, and we certainly mean no harm by purchasing such devices. I believe this is an issue with suppliers, not people trying out the ketogenic diet.
I’d like to highlight that this post is for people who can no longer take readings from urine sticks because they eventually fail to give correct readings. Most of the time, beginners buy Ketostix 🙂
I’ve been getting a lot of comments on this post over the last few days, and I only approved yours because you were the ONLY one who was not extremely condescending. So thank you 🙂

Thank you for your reply.
Yes there is a shortage which seems to have gotten worse in the last 12 months. I certainly don’t begrudge those that need to lose considerable amounts of weight as in the long run they will be preventing so many health issues. Unfortunately from my discussions with all of the chemist’s, majority of people they are serving are obvious gym junkies, body builders who clearly aren’t in the realm that we are talking about. Maybe there needs to be a prescription required for them which would allow those with a medical need to lose weight to access them? Just thinking out loud.
FatForWeightLoss says
Honestly, At chemists, I see many many boxes of glucose strips, but there is only ever 2-3 boxes of ketone strips. Again, I believe this is a supplier issue. But I appreciate your concern. Hopefully, this issue will be rectified soon.

Wow, really? Selfish. ANyone can and should be able to buy these things if they want to. A low cab diet is the best way to prevent and even cure some diabetes.

My daughter is 2 and a type 1 diabetic (this is an autoimmune disease, not lifestyle/genetic like type 2 diabetes). If her ketones are too high she will go into Ketoacidosis. This is a life threatening condition and if I cant measure her ketones properly & rectify the situation, she could die. I have often gone into the chemist and found them out of ketone strips. And the chemist always says its because of people doing the keto diet. I understand you are trying to get healthy, but what is more important – my daughter not dying of ketoacidosis or you losing weight?
FatForWeightLoss says
Hi Lauren,
I understand your frustration. Truth is, Chemists should simply stock more of them.
Louis says
I just picked up the last 20 boxes of optium keytone strips from my local chemist for my intermittent fasting monitoring… It’s a relief to know I have plenty now, enough for the next couple of weeks.
Perhaps you should be contacting the customer service departments of the retailers/wholesalers/manufacturers to raise your concerns with them, instead of attempting to gaslight total strangers on the internet who have the audacity to take some responsibility and proactive steps towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Since you brought it up, I don’t know your daughter so don’t really care about her, FYI. Although I am sure I am already indirectly contributing to her expensive treatment via way of my taxes.
Louis says
I often go around to all of the chemists in my area and buy all of the keto strips on the shelf.
I have half a cupboard full now… I guess for a rainy day. I use a 16/8 intermittent fasting schedule throughout the year and monitor my ketone levels accordingly.
I have some for sale if you ever get stuck… $50 for a box of 10, which I still view as great value. As I am sure you would agree, you simply can’t put a price on your health.
For an extra $20, I will even post them to you, via registered mail.
Beth says
That’s just a load of crap. That didn’t happen. No pharamcy would say “because a number of new dieters are using them” because it’s not their place to firstly share that information with you, and secondly, because they won’t know? Did they ask every single person at check out why they were buying every item they did? Because again, not their place nor their right.
And urine strips don’t work as was explained. This is a product that can help a lot of people, some people are so overweight keto is helping them, to be healthy, are they not as important? And your comment about “they all seem to be gym junkies at the pharmacy” is again very judgemental and over the top. Do you live at the pharmacy to calculate every single one of their customers?
michele says
yes there is nothing saying anything about a rebate
FatForWeightLoss says
The deal may have expired for the rebate. Unfortunately there is nothing i can do about this, however they are still such a great deal!
Kara says
How do you obtain the rebate on the purchase of a blood ketone monitor?
