Mission Foods has released some low carb wraps, but my job is to find out whether these are going to be suitable to eat on a ketogenic diet. Let’s jump right in.
Overview
These low carb wraps are very similar to ordinary wraps, except that the carbohydrate content is lower. Compared to Mission Foods’ original wraps, which contain 38 g of carbs per serving, these low carb wraps have 11.3 g net carbs per wrap.
So, being low carb, how does Mission Foods remove the carbohydrate content, but still keep the same texture, taste and smell that a normal wrap would have? Keep in mind, Mission Foods have a certain type of wrap that is associated with their brand. They are soft to eat, flexible to wrap, but tough to break.
The cost for a package of 6 wraps is around $4-$5 Australian, working out to be just under $1 per wrap. They come in a resealable bag and can be found at most supermarkets around Australia, America and the UK.
Seeing these wraps in the store is a pretty good indication that low carb is here to stay, but the real question is, are they much better for your health compared to the full-carb version?
How Do Mission Foods’ Low Carb Wraps Taste?
Personally, I find these taste almost identical to ordinary Mission Foods’ wraps. I’ve always been a big fan of their texture and taste back when I didn’t mind the extra carbs (and gluten), so this low carb version is very similar to their classic taste.
The flexibility is great, and can easily withstand a traditional sold wrap. I placed 2 eggs, cream cheese, sugar-free chili sauce and some spinach into 1 whole wrap, and there were no tears.
The size is the same as Mission Foods’ other wraps, but instead of 8 wraps, the packet only contains 6. I’m guessing the extra gluten costs a little more. 😉
Over on Instagram, I asked a question to those who have tried them, and what their thoughts are on the product:
@mindiwwynne
I bought a package, but they taste like cardboard. Even if they tasted great, I’d only use them rarely. There are a few recipes for low carb tortillas I’d like to try making my own.
@jeff_kar
I eat them once a fortnight as burritos. I have 2 per meal and ensure I have had as little carbs as possible in other meals that day as well as training some cardio. I feel like I am cheating they are so good:) zero bloating for me
@nikigirlswag
Hi, I’ve had them before and they Tate fine once heated but I feel like I don’t lose when I eat them regularly. On the flip side, I don’t gain either. Earlier in my journey when I was losing almost daily, I noticed that I’d go a few days without a weight change after eating them. I felt like it was due to the high total carb count. I’ve moved on to a new brand with 3 carbs.
@ismoniak
My husband loves them, me not so much unless they are crispy
@goalgetter75
I eat them at least twice a week. They do not kick me out of ketosis. They don’t make me bloated.
@revivedcareer
Not sure if they are the same but had ‘power wraps’ that are low carb. Didn’t feel bloated, was great on the run, lasted in fridge without becoming brittle but as my blood ketones are fragile – I dropped down by 0.3 mmol/L whilst sugars remained stable.
@tanyahumble
Make great tortilla chips!
@qssharona
I use them as a treat. They are especially convenient for driving and bringing your lunch in the car. Or breakfast. Eggs and sausage burrito. Or a turkey and veg wrap. No gizzard issues here! Oh and I sometimes make tortilla chips with them.
@wmford777
I literally wouldn’t survive without them. Probably the only food that has kept me from falling off the carb deep end
@palmy_if_keto
By the way I tried this before and they very good, did not have any trouble at all, I prefer cutdacarb wraps but this is a great option to find in the store and they actually taste like tortillas, but I only eat 1 tortilla with a meal or 2 if I eat only meat that day I change depending my carbs intake of the day. An thank you for all your tips and ideas.
@corinne.blooms
I avoid them. I don’t think I know how to eat just one.
Taste Overview
In review, most people love the taste but are a little concerned about the carbs, and keep them as a sometimes food. It sounds like the wraps might make really good tortilla chips, and if you only have a few, it would be a great option. These wraps taste very similar to the ordinary ones, and it helps keep people from falling off the keto bandwagon.
Ingredients
Wheat flour, water, modified wheat starch, wheat protein isolate (gluten), preservative 223, vegetable oil, wheat gluten, isolated soy protein, wheat fibre, acidity regulator 297, mineral salts 500 450, emulsifier 471, iodised salt, preservatives 282 200, vegetable gum 466, flavour, sweetener
The nutrition per serving, which is 1 wrap:
Energy: 547 kj
Protein: 7.5 g
Fat: 4.6 g
Total carbs: 18.4 g
Net carbs: 11.3 g
*In Australia, the carbohydrate levels indicate net carbs, since fibre is left out of the equation. So when people say “it contains only 11.3 g net carbs”, it actually contains 18.4 g total carbs.*
Are Mission Foods’ Low Carb Wraps Keto Friendly?
As you all know, a ketogenic diet attempts to remove all grains, legumes and sugars from the body in order to maintain neutral blood glucose, which helps reduce insulin levels and helps the body become more insulin sensitive.
Taking a look at these wraps, the ingredients contain a high level of grains, legumes, and most importantly, gluten.
Since gluten is a protein, it makes sense for this bread to contain more gluten than regular wheat wraps.
If you are a coeliac, or even slightly gluten sensitive, these wraps are not suitable for you.
Soy can be very estrogen mimicking, especially in its refined form.
These wraps are jam-packed with non-keto friendly ingredients, which was no surprise to me.
Okay, so if you’re in a pinch, these wraps are better than high carb wraps, but I’d suggest having a lettuce wrap or even eating the food without the wrap altogether.
I wanted to get your opinion, so I took to Instagram again to find out if these ingredients are suitable for YOU:
@koryshar
I grew up in San Antonio eating Mexican food all my life. The low carb Mission tortillas keep me sane on keto diet without causing my husband’s arthritis to act up. My husband and I started keto a little over a year ago because he was in a military training accident that caused him to be medically discharged and left him overweight. Not even 40 years old, he was left unable to walk without a cane even after surgery to repair the damage from the accident. His walking was severely impaired and he was in pain all day, every day and he could no longer exercise. His weight started climbing very quickly so we began looking for something to help with his weight problem. After his first month of keto, he had lost 15 lbs and began using his cane less and less. After 2 months he was walking unassisted. The tortillas and wraps were a part of his keto diet, and have never caused him any type of inflammation to his joints. He was medically diagnosed with arthritis in his hips, knees, and ankles after his accident and 17 years of military service. His joints always let him know within about 24 hours if he has eaten anything that causes him inflammation because he can barely walk the next day. I completely understand that some people may look at a product like this as cheating. But one person’s keto diet doesn’t look like another person’s keto diet and I think that’s okay. As keto dieters, we are all on this same journey to live a healthier life, and if you have to eat a low carb tortilla every once in a while on that journey to stay sane and keep on track, then that’s okay too.
@rubytheridge
I have tried them, am no expert but they were good. I actually like La Banderita brand better, still low NC.
@mrs.lasley
I personally don’t care to include foods with those ingredients in my diet, but I don’t fault those that do. Everyone does Keto their own way and that’s their prerogative. I’m not here to police anyone but myself! I can definitely see them being a viable option in a pinch.
@jeff_kar
I eat them once a fortnight as burritos. I have 2 per meal and ensure i have had as little carbs as possible in other meals that day as well as training some cardio. I feel like I am cheating they are sooooo good:) zero bloating for me
@mrskendall_lovesketo
I just generally do without grains (even their fibers). I used to do wraps early in my progression. I just don’t anymore. No grains or nuts. Not because I don’t love them. Nuts break this 48 year old out in HORRIBLE acne. I’ve developed sensitivity to many things on this journey!!!
@saymadane
Not the cleanest ingredients but definitely doesn’t kick me out of ketosis.
@devonmarie13
Easy option but they make me sooo bloated and hate my life the day after.
@aurabel
I have had Mission lower carb wraps, but I’ve had Diego’s Go Well Lower Carb Wrap and even though the net carbs reduced it to zero the total carbs were 15. It upset my stomach and gave me heartburn.
@anascakeworld
I don’t eat gluten, that is a no no for me ?
@lizcarr1
They have grain so not low carb- not really keto.
@keto_bandito
Something in them bothers me but I have chemical issues and do keto for inflammation control and to stay off medications. It’s one of those things people have to test for themselves. ?
@val__val
Check out @sietefoods. I believe their wraps are lower in carbs ?
@vodkaprincess17
I like having the option of having them but if I eat more than one on the same day it ALWAYS kicks me out of ketosis… even if I’m below 17g carbs for the day. Now I only eat ONE when I need something quick so no more fajitas for me. I’ve been eyeing a keto tortilla recipe but it’s not fridge/freezer friendly & I seriously don’t have time to make a batch every time I want one?
@ummari_nancy
I think they’re ok to have occasionally. They do make me feel bloated though. If I’m on the run and need to eat one, I will but they don’t make me feel the greatest.
@kates_keto_journey
I do the empower ones, with 3G carbs, i eat them maybe once a month. I’m all for the motto of if it keeps me from eating a real high carb meal, carbicide then I’m all for it ?? but I wouldn’t be eating them everyday
@ketosizzle
I need these convenience foods on keto to keep it sustainable. They are 5 NC which isn’t a lot for me. The flavour is “ok” and like most all keto convenience tortillas/bread they bloat me a little but that’s what psyllium husk and all that fibre does! I still need a tortilla a few times a week. ??♀️
So What Should I Eat Instead?
I have some alternative recipes that ARE keto friendly:
- Keto tortilla recipe
- Creamy Chicken Lettuce Wraps
Here Are The Pros And Cons
PROS:
- Easy to buy instead of making your own.
- Tastes great and freezes well.
- Better than an ordinary wrap, and can keep you on track in a pinch.
CONS:
- Contains unusually high amounts of gluten (wheat protein).
- Contains soy, wheat, and other non-keto friendly ingredients.
- Will increase your blood sugar levels.
- Made from 49% Australian ingredients.

Aaron’s Verdict
Personally, these wraps are too high in net carbs to be considered keto. A large amount of wheat (grains) and soy (legumes) doesn’t agree with me, but would certainly work if I had no other choice.
It’s good to keep in mind that there are plenty of other options, including lettuce, which is far cheaper in comparison, so don’t ever feel like you are stuck, and need to eat these wheat wraps in order to stay keto.

I too have been eating them and I am on keto. It doesn’t kick me out of ketosis but it does lower my levels I’ve noticed. So I think I’ll limit myself to maybe one or two a week, not every single day… but I like them otherwise.
Jacqui Barker says
In Australia (I think) when the fibre is listed separately from the carbohydrates it is to be deducted to workout net carbs. When the dietary fibre is listed under total carbohydrates it means it has already been deducted
FatForWeightLoss says
Here is some more clarification on those two topics: https://www.fatforweightloss.com.au/net-carbs-vs-total-carbs/ https://www.fatforweightloss.com.au/how-to-calculate-net-carbs-on-keto/
Lorena says
Hi Jacqui – yes you are correct. The fibre should be subtracted from the Total Carb marker to give you the Net Carbs. So this article appears to be incorrect.
Sonya says
As I’m still fairly new to the keto lifestyle, other ketoers were saying they were keto friendly, so o took the plunge and bought them to make a cinnamon cream cheese roll up.. it didn’t make me feel sick or anything but I sure do feel guilty now knowing the ingredients are NOT keto friendly.. will check my breath analyzer to see if I’m still in ketosis ??
Donna says
I use a mission wrap that is only 5 net carbs. They are delicious and they do not raise my blood sugar. Mike the meter tells me they are okay.
Fran Adkins says
There are soft tortilla out there with only 4 net carbs.I know..I use them. They are thinner than original tortillas but serve the purpose and taste great Look for
La banderita.
Barry says
Not a fan of anything with vegetable oil within
THERESA MCFADDIN ORDEL says
This article is extremely helpful! I found another wrap that seems to have less “junk” than Mission. I live in America, so I am not sure if you can get these in Australia.
The brand is called Ole Mexican Foods. The wraps are called “Extreme Wellness! Tomato Basil” – 8 wraps per pack, 5 net carbs, great taste… made with olive oil and flax seed.
Evelyn Haddad says
how can i get hold of the keto wrap
Carol says
Sigh, I was hoping it was 11 gm total and 4 gm net carbs.
Monica says
Me too! Dont we suppose to subtract the fiber amount from the carb count?
