Alcohol is a common solvent. What is a solvent? It simply means that it’s able to dissolve other substances. This means that alcohol can easily take on flavours from other objects. In come the chillies!
Mojitos are most commonly made with white rum. I’m not a big fan of white rum, so I’ve decided to switch it out for tequila. It’s a common switch, so don’t call me crazy!
I have taken the classic mojito recipe and put my own spin on it. A Chilli mojito recipe with paprika salt! I’m a die-hard chilli fan, so incorporating it into cocktails is a very pleasing experience. Do you know what goes well with heat? Smoke! I’ve incorporated a smoky paprika salt for the rim to complement the cool refreshing taste.
Everybody seems to have a bad tequila experience. It’s such a shame because tequila is such a delicious drink if done right. Most commonly it’s used in tequila sunrise, or over-consumed as a teenager. Tequila is commonly served neat in Mexico and as a shot with salt and lime across the rest of the world. Apparently, Casa Dragones is the best tequila to sip neat.
Tequila Explained
Tequila is made exclusively from Blue Agave, which is a form of Agave plant that is grown mostly in the red volcanic soils of Mexico. Tequila a type of mezcal, which literally means “overcooked agave”. To extract the agave syrup, the blue agave plant’s leaves are removed after seven to fourteen years, and extracted from the core of the plant, called the piña.
The remaining juice is filtered and heated to break the polysaccharides (complex carbohydrates) into monosaccharides (simple sugars). One of the main components of this plant is inulin, which is what is called resistant starch. These types of starches benefit the body’s gut bacteria as it cannot be broken down. It feeds the good gut bacteria in your stomach and intestines.
What alcohol can I have on the keto diet?
Now, don’t worry. Every alcohol is made from sugar. The fermentation process converts the sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide, leaving very little actual sugar behind. In comparison to beer and wine, white spirits like Tequila is one of the best forms of Low carb alcohol you can have on the keto diet, otherwise known as keto drunk…
Beer is not recommended on the ketogenic diet, mainly because it’s made from grains, and it has a relatively high amount of carbs. Certain types of wine can be okay, so try to stick with the dryer varieties just to be safe.
