Keto Meat Pie
Australians love their meat pies. You can get them at every petrol station (we call them servo’s) along with some kind of sugar-filled iced coffee beverage. Its a tradesman’s breakfast & lunch.
A good old Australian meat pie and an afternoon at the footy screaming your team to victory goes hand in glove. It’s very Aussie!
Going Keto means you cannot indulge in such foods, especially the sugar filled iced coffees! But not to worry, now you can make a Keto Meat Pie and wash it down with a bulletproof coffee!
The original meat pie was simple mutton with gravy, but we have become quite dandy with our pies in both the making and the eating of them.
We now have many and varied styles of the pie. Beef and bacon, pea pies, anything you can think you. Bacon and Eggs. You name it! Our famous Aussie pies have stood the test of time with brands such as Sargent, Four and Twenty and Mrs Mac’s being able to trace their history back many generations.
Horror stories always roam the streets which state that some pies are filled with the leftover meat from the butcher’s floor. If you come to Australia and you hear this, maybe its time to start making your own.
Keto Meat Pie Recipe Notes
Some other recipes for Keto Meat Pies I’ve noticed using the same kind of bread/pastry around the entire casing. This is wrong! the top needs to be crisp and a little bit like puff pastry. At the very least the bottom and top need to be different.
I used pizza base as the pie topping, which actually worked out really well!
Hopefully, you enjoy this Keto Meat Pie as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Keto Meat Pie
Ingredients
Pie Crust
- 1/2 Cup Coconut Flour
- 1/4 water
- 60 g Butter Chilled
Pie Top
- 1/2 Cup Mozzarella Cheese
- 1 Tbsp Coconut Flour
- 1 Egg
Pie Mince
- 200 g Mince
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 Carrot
- 1/2 Onion
- 1 Stock Cube
- 200 ml water
- 1 tsp Xanthium gum
- 1 Tbsp Tomato Sauce Sugar Free
- 1 tsp Gelatin Optional
Instructions
- Add crust ingredients into bowl and mix with a fork. The butter will be hard to press, but stick with it!
- Place the ingredients into a baking pan and press out the bottom and edges. I used a measuring cup to do all the hard work for me. Place in the fridge while you get the filling ready.
- In a pan, add the onion first with the olive oil and smell the wonderful aromas. Add the meat and remaining vegetables until the mince is cooked. Place the remaining ingredients into the pan and let it simmer for 5 mins. The liquid should be congregating nicely.
- Remove the pie crust from the fridge and place the meat inside.
- Melt the mozzarella cheese in the microwave for 60 secs, add the coconut flour and egg until it resembles dough. Roll out into round pie crust toppings like shown in the photos.
- Make the pie topping base exactly like you would in this recipe https://www.fatforweightloss.com.au/recipe/keto-fathead-pizza/
- Place in the oven at 180 degrees C (360f) for 15-20 mins (until top is brown). Enjoy!

Sorry, there are no onions or carrots in the high volume pies, you say
you are basing this on. This is more just an individual bakery style pie.
janine says
Any suggestion what can I use in the pie top instead of cheese as I am lactose intolerant?
FatForWeightLoss says
Hi Janine, I’d suggest making a small batch of this: https://www.fatforweightloss.com.au/dairy-free-keto-pie-crust/

Can we use this recipe in a pie maker? I haven’t used mine in ages…
FatForWeightLoss says
Hmm, possibly. You would have to test it out.

I’m in the US and want to try your keto meat pie recipe. Can you clarify whether the sugar-free tomato sauce indicated in the recipe is actual tomato sauce in a can or ketchup? Seems I’ve watched enough international telly to suspect that your usage of the phrase “tomato sauce” might very well mean ketchup… Thanks to advise. I need to know in a hurry.
FatForWeightLoss says
Hi Kiru, yes tomato sauce is the same as ketchup here in AUS, great question!
Kiru Edo says
Thank you!
karen says
what size is the ‘pan’. Is it muffins or cupcakes. I only have a muffin tin
FatForWeightLoss says
This one is a pie tin
Greg says
What is the size of each pie?
Cathy says
Is there any reason this wouldn’t work in one of those pie makers? I have a Salter model I’ve been waiting to try!
Sharn says
Hi what is the actual portion size or weight of each pie ? Thank you, cant wait to try but with almond meal 🙂
Amma says
I tried this recipe and its a total winner.
However after baking the top crust separatedfrom the base. So i could get it together in one piece but it was veerrrrry delicious. Wish I could post a picx

Hi Aaron, I’m still at the beginning of this keto journey still researching. Just wondering if the coconut flour can be substituted for another flour? I have made a keto bread which used coconut flour and my family don’t like the coconut flavour that you get. Thanks in advance.
FatForWeightLoss says
Yes, you can substitute with almond flour 🙂 Use 4 X as much.
Anita Blume says
Hey there, making this today, does the bottom crust have an egg?? The image in the method says it does but it’s not listed in the ingredients?
Sue says
You don’t list an egg in the crust ingredients but the picture shows an egg is that right
Carla says
Yes where does the egg go as the receipe doesn’t match the photo?!?
Victoria says
Hi Carla,
There is an egg listed in the top crust section. 🙂

Hi Aaron. I was looking for an interesting recipe for my keto family and found yours so I tried it out today. Been to New Zealand, my brother lives there and lives on gas station meat pies and “Z” drinks. I can’t imagine how he is still alive.
Your meat pies were terrific, my whole family loved them, better than what my brother eats at the gas station in New Zealand.
